Zapatista Army of National Liberation declare war on the government of Mexico after they cancel Article 27 of Mexico’s constitution regarding protected native communal landholdings under the NAFTA agreement. The landholding rights for the farmers where established under the 1910–1919 revolution under Emiliano Zapatas.

The EZLN take four villages and protest at San Cristobal de las Casas, Altamirano, Las Margaritas, Ocosingo, and Chanal where they attack civic centres and town halls.

The EZLN engage the Mexican Army in Altamirano.

This is the first phase of the Chiapas conflict which is still ongoing today.
