Second Battle of Tikrit — 2015 (Iraq Civil War)

Iraqi’s recapture Tikrit from ISIS.

The US seem to provide 17 air sorties after 90% of the place was re-captured, much to the consternation of the ground forces. As such, I have included 17 US air units with 1 sortie, as opposed to 1 air unit with 17 sorties.

The Iraqis also have some artillery and 3 air sorties of their own.

The Iraqis begin on 2 March 2015 by surrounding Tikrit.

On 3 March 2015 the Iraqis capture the oilfieds of Alas and Ajeel.

On 7 March 2015 the Iraqis took al-Dour.

On 9 March 2015 the Iraqis took Al-Alam.

The push into Tikrik starts on 11 March 2015 but it was said that by 13 March 2015 that the ground offensive had stalled.

The fighting then slowed down and on 23 March 2015 the Iraqis doscovered a tunnel connecting Al-Alam and the outer part of Tikrit.

The US then carried out airstrikes on 25 March 2015, but the ground offensive did not start for another two days due to issues selecting which units to use.

The RAF carried out airstrikes on 26 March 2015 and then on 28 March he US carried out more airstrikes.

The Iraqis then advanced further into the city on 31 March 2015.

Whilst the city was declared liberated by 3 April 2015 further pockets of ISIS were found in northern areas of the city and fighting continued, with more pockets found on 10 and 11 April 2015.

Finally 140 sleeper agents were located in the city on 17 April 2015 when the battle was finally considered over.
