Bangui Attack

Rebel forces make two attacks on Bangui on 13 January 2021.

This is not so much of a game but a reference point regarding Soviet forces in Afghanistan in February 1982.

The Times article states that there were 12 Soviet Divisions in Afghanistan in February 1982. The article goes on to discuss some of the issues relating to the Afghanistan Army which was described as being useless.

The Soviet Divisions in Afghanistan at the time were:

  • 16th Motor Division, Kunduz and Mazar-i-Sharif
  • 201st Motor Rifle Division, Jalalabad
  • 305th Motor Rifle Division, Gardez

Second Battle of Tikrit — 2015 (Iraq Civil War)

Iraqi’s recapture Tikrit from ISIS.

The US seem to provide 17 air sorties after 90% of the place was re-captured, much to the consternation of the ground forces. As such, I have included 17 US air units with 1 sortie, as opposed to 1 air unit with 17 sorties.

The Iraqis also have some artillery and 3 air sorties of their own.

The Iraqis begin on 2 March 2015 by surrounding Tikrit.

On 3 March 2015 the Iraqis capture the oilfieds of Alas and Ajeel.

On 7 March 2015 the Iraqis took al-Dour.

On 9 March 2015 the Iraqis took…

The Battle of Raqqa (March 2013) took place over four days, 2 March to 6 March 2013.

It involved the units from the Muntasir Billah Brigade, FSA (Free Syrian Army), Jabhat an-Nusra, Ahrar ash-Sham (part of the Syrian Islamic Front) and the brigade of Huthaya bin al-Yaman against elements of the Syrian 17th Division.

The battle was also known as the Raid of the Almighty by the rebel forces.

It was also noted for the withdrawal of Syrian 17th Division forces who left mainly without a fight and then retreated west and east.

The rebel forces attacked the city from…

I’ve been planning on writing up scenarios for a while in greater detail with the intention of publishing the War Blog Modern War Journal. Each journal will detail 10 engagements.

Great Bitter Lake Crossing — 1973 (Yom Kippur War)

First Egyptian crossing of Operation Badr in the Yom Kippur War.

This scenario is limited to the actions of the 130th Amphibious Brigade and its 602nd and 603rd Mechanized Infantry Battalions crossing Great Bitter Lake.

They land uncontested but shortly after a tank company from Kibrit East comes down to intercept them. This is the tank company in the fortified poistion to the top of Great Bitter Lake. The other Isreali units northward are just there for show and the main assaults were at that time coming in but are not modelled here.

130th Amphibious Brigade is tasked with taking…

This scenario reflects the period following the Peoples Democratic Party of Afghanistan coup from 1 June to 28 June 1978. These dates are rough approximations.

Following the coup, the Peoples Democratic Party of Afghanistan started to issues guidance on the way it would govern, including a decree on ethnic equality, emancipation for women and land redistribution as well as leading a revival of conservative Islam in Afghanistan.

However, in many rural areas there was resistance to that and combined with the efforts of agitators that spread false rumours about the new governments intentions, several Afghan political parties formed Jub Najat-e-Milli…

Mbarara and Masaka Offensives — 1979 (Uganda-Tanzania War)

This scenario represents the second phase of the invasion into Uganda.

The Tanzanians identify the two strategic towns of Mbarara and Masaka which are defended by Ugandan forces including tanks.

The assault starts off with the 207 Brigade attackig the units in Katera near Sango Bay to stop them from flanking their advance to Masaka.

The 201 and 108 Brigades then attack the airstrip at Lukoma which is overlooked by Nsambya Hill, Simba Hills and Kikanda Hill which all have Ugandan artillery and armour on them.

The night before some Tanzanian Brigade Commanders had a meeting and some drinks during…

Operation Forough Javidan — 1988 (Iran-Iraq War 1980–1988)

Mujahadeen-e-Khalq forces see an opportunity to take some ground as a Iran and Iraq accept United Nations Security Council Resolution 598 to end the war on 8 August 1988. They drive deep through Iranian teritory with support from Iraqi air power, thinking that the people would rise up against the Islamic government of Ayatollah Khomeini. However, little support materialised.

They drove through to about Kermanshah with the road before them open to Tehran.

However, the Iranians didn’t counter-attack immediatly and waited until the Mujahadeen-e-Khalq forces had stretched their suppply and were out of range for Iraqi air support. They then…
